This is gonna be part of a series of pulp characters I've been wanting to do for a while, and since I need a lot of practice on my digital stuff, seeing as how my work hasn't wowed me for a while, I thought it would be the perfect excuse to do something new. Hopefully I don't butcher these characters too much. haha! Most of my other projects are on hold for now while I indulge myself somewhat.
Expect to see some Flash Gordon and Doc Savage action soon! Would really appreciate feedback - on lighting and composition especially!! Comments
I really like the composition, but, the coloring isn't really working for me. I like the colors, but, the application makes everything seem a bit plasticy.
I would suggest picking one, 'hot spot', or concentration of light, like maybe on his coat by his leg, and then having that intesity fade as it moves across the figure and away from the light source. It's almost a bit tooo smooth. Don't forget about the magic of high contrast. It can create a great dramatic effect. Overall, I think you're heading in the right direction. back to you art;
you have requested crits on the lighting and composition so i will try and do my best, and i must say that i am no expert so pls bear with me
The Composition is pretty strong and 'Shadow'y
the pose is solid, although it would have been better if we could see the legs to complete the pic, to see if he is cornered, in retreat, or about to move forward to pop his twin guns at the baddies below, to get a sense of his stance.
the general color palette looks good enough but the over use of grays have kinda made it look flat, you could have used stronger highlights to bring out the form forward, since the two spots on him as well might pour some serious light on him.
then since we talked about the spots we might as well move on to Lighting which is there in basic. as i stated before the two spots that hit him right on spot the front of his coat should have stronger highlights and the metal of the guns should have brighter harder glare/highlights. the full silver moon also should lighten the left side of the Shadow, on the darkened inner side of the coloumn might have some reflection of that light.
For last the crimson scarf and ring really create a strong focus for the eye and balances the attention on the form, if not present would have moved on to the moon.
thnx for such a great piece on such a cult hero. i gotta go and watch the movie now
cheers
